GRAND SLAM WINNER CAROLINE WOZNIACKI AND PAULA BADOSA START WITH WILDCARDS
Bad Homburg, the 25th of May 2024 – Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki and Paula Badosa are celebrating their debut at the Bad Homburg Open powered by Solarwatt (22 to 29 June 2024): The Danish Australian Open winner in 2018 and the Spanish fan favourite will be competing at the WTA 500 tournament in the Kurpark with wildcards. Two days earlier, reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova had confirmed her participation in the grass court event on the historic grounds of TC Bad Homburg.
“As professionals, we love playing in packed stadiums”
The 33-year-old Caroline Wozniacki, who has been world number one for a total of 71 weeks, is already looking forward to seeing her good friend Angelique Kerber again. The tournament ambassador of the Bad Homburg Open powered by Solarwatt is making her Kurpark comeback after a baby break. “I can hardly wait to come to Bad Homburg for the first time! I’ve heard great things about the tournament from Angie,” revealed Caroline Wozniacki, winner of the 2017 WTA Championships. Above all, Angelique Kerber must have raved to her about the atmosphere and the ambience in the Kurpark. “It’s always something special,” emphasised Caroline Wozniacki, “to play in front of an enthusiastic crowd.”
Paula Badosa is also looking forward to the energy and the Wimbledon flair. “As professionals, we love playing in packed stadiums – and Bad Homburg seems to have a special tennis community,” said the former world number two, adding with a view to the most important tennis tournament: “For me, it’s the ideal preparation for Wimbledon. I am grateful to have received a wildcard for Bad Homburg.” The grass court classic on Church Road starts on 1 July, two days after the final in Kurpark.
Power mums on tour: Wozniacki is the best example of the new trend
Caroline Wozniacki returned to the WTA Tour in late summer 2023 after the birth of her daughter Olivia and son James – and, like Angelique Kerber, she is representative of a number of mothers who are now active again after taking a break to have a baby. “I want to show my children that you can realise your dreams. Regardless of age and role,” said the Dane, explaining her intention.
At last year’s US Open, Caroline Wozniacki reached the round of 16 in her second tournament after her comeback. The Big Apple is a good place for the daughter of a former professional footballer anyway: she has already reached the final at Flushing Meadows twice.
Paula Badosa has already won the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, among others. The 26-year-old, born in New York, feels comfortable on all surfaces and favours an aggressive baseline game.
